WSU Rowing Encourages Students to Join the Team
January 14, 2019 | Rowing
WSU Rowing is searching for driven young women to continue their athletic career by joining the team.
PULLMAN, Wash.-Â The Washington State University women's rowing team is in search of tenacious, driven, young women who are interested in continuing their athletic career. We are in search of individuals who are interested in both the position of 'Coxie' and 'Rower.'Â
Walk-on student-athletes are common to NCAA rowing teams, combining with recruited rowers from around the world to add further competitive experience to the team. Last year, at the Pac-12 Rowing Championships, our team brought 41 athletes. Of those, 15 started their rowing career at Washington State. Our novice women's 8+ went on the capture a bronze medal at the championship that weekend. Â
The 'Coxie' position is filled by out-going individuals, smaller in stature, who enjoy leadership positions. The Coxie is like the quarterback for rowing. The 'Rower' position is filled by competitive athletes from any sport who are 5'10" and above.
No experience is required to try out, our novice program is designed to teach complete beginners the skills needed to row at the NCAA level. The WSU women's rowing staff is looking for tenacious, hard-working, determined, and committed women who are excited by the prospect of being part of a Division I, Pac-12 team. The varsity rowing program is a fully funded team, meaning there is no cost to you to participate.Â
"The novice rowing team is a critical component of our team," says WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "Year after year, young women come to WSU, fall in love with a sport they have never tried before, work hard, and reap the benefits of being a student-athlete on a Division I team. It will be challenging, but so is anything worth doing"Â
Please fill out a questionnaire at the following link and come by the meetings to learn more about our team.Â
