Track & Field Competition Continues for Current Cougs and Alums

COUGARS WRAP-UP YEAR; TAKE UP SUMMER TRAINING, COMPETITION
The Washington State University track and field team student-athletes concluded the 2017 outdoor season with three All-America performances at the NCAA Championships...Alissa Brooks-Johnson finished sixth in the heptathlon for first team honors while CJ Allen (9th in 400m hurdles) and Brock Eager (14th in hammer) earned second team honors...during the outdoor season, WSU women surpassed or equaled lifetime-best 70 marks while Cougar men surpassed or equaled lifetime-best 75 marks...a total of 24 marks were added in 2017 to the WSU All-time Top 10 or Freshman School Records: 19 for women and five for men...summer includes training and conditioning routines but some will join Cougar alumni in competition including the USATF Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 22-25 at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium...NBC Sports is televising on its networks.

WAYNE PHIPPS, DIR. OF WSU CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD
Wayne Phipps (University of British Columbia '91) is in his third season with the Washington State track and field program...he became the 15th men's coach and the second coach for the combined men's and women's program at WSU on July 1, 2014, after 19 years at the University of Idaho...Phipps led the Cougar men's cross country program back-to-back NCAA Championships at-large berth appearances with a 14th-place finish in 2016: the highest in 32 years after the entire 2015 team that placed 26th returned for the 2016 season...while at Idaho, Phipps was conference coach of the year 14 times, and led the Vandals to a record 16 conference titles.

COUGAR TRACK & FIELD COACHING STAFF
WSU Track & Field coaching staff includes Associate Head Coaches Julie Taylor (throws), and  Yogi Teevens (sprints, relays and horizontal jumps)...Assistant Coaches are Brad Walker (vertical jumps), Allix Potratz-Lee (distance) and Ryan Grinnell (multis and horizontal jumps)...Andrea Sabbatine is the Operations Coordinator...volunteers this year include: Jesse Jorgensen, CharLee Linton, Tim Taylor and Kayla Warren.

COUGARS SET FOR SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS
There are five WSU alums (entry marks) slated to compete at the USATF Outdoor Championships, June 22-25 in Sacramento, Calif.: women's triple jump - Blessing Ufodiama (13.47m/44-2 1/2), women's 3000m steeplechase - Collier Lawrence (9:51.13) and Caroline Austin (9:51.38), and men's 400m hurdles - Jeshua Anderson (49.88) and Craig (CJ) Allen (49.40)...Anderson is the school's record-holder in the intermediate hurdles with a time of 47.93 which he ran when he won the 2011 USA Outdoor Championship...Ufodiama's 2004 WSU triple jump mark of 12.89m/42-3 1/2i, is second-best in school records, was surpassed this year by Kiana Davis' 13.01m/42-8 1/4...Austin's 2013 steeplechase time of 10:08.49 is the school record with Lawrence's 2008 time of 10:25.27 fifth on the all-time list...Allen's 49.40 time, set this spring, is third-best in WSU's top ten list...returning Cougars are also competing this summer...Paul  Ryan (redshirt sophomore, Moscow, Idaho) ran the men's 1500m High Performance race at the Stumptown Twilight Meet June 16 at Lewis and Clark College in Portland and raced to a PR time of 3:46.07, third in his section and 17th overall...freshman women's javelin thrower Atina Kamasi (Novi Sad, Serbia) is expected to compete at the European Athletics U23 Championships, July 13-16, in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Senior Excellence in Academics (given to seniors who have earned a minimum of 90 credits with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA, been members of the WSU Athletics All-Academic Team each semester, enrolled at WSU for at least two years, and excelled in their degree program and sport program)...T&F had 8 of the 19 seniors honored.
