PULLMAN, Wash. -- Under sunny skies and mild temperatures, Washington State track and field competitors won 28 of the 37 events contested and claimed four meet records Saturday at the 17th Annual Cougar Invitational meet at Mooberry Track in Pullman. Additionally, Cougar men tallied 23 lifetime-best marks and WSU women had 18 PRs.
The WSU men hammer throwers started the day with a first-through-fourth and sixth place finishes but more impressive were that all five men threw lifetime-bests.
Brock Eager led the way with a throw of 225-feet 3 inches (68.66m), a mark that fourth-best in WSU's all-time records.
Travis Pickett tossed an eight-foot PR with his mark of 205-3 (62.53m) for second place with
Wyatt Meyring's 195-0 (59.43m) taking third.
Amani Brown threw 192-8 (58.73m) and
Derek Crites threw 162-5 (49.80m).
Sprinter
Ja'Maun Charles was a double-winner, triple if you count the relay. The talented sophomore ran the 100m in a PR time of 10.41 seconds and the 200m in a non-wind-aided PR time of 21.17, a meet record, erasing Anthony Buchanan's 2003 time of 21.22.
CJ Allen won the 400m hurdles in a meet record time of 50.72, replacing Eric Dudley's 2003 time of 51.61. Charles and Allen were joined by
Zach Smith and
Sam Brixey to win the 4x100m relay in a season-best of 40.66.
"Going into this meet, the coaches and I wanted to focus on coming off the turn (in the 200m) and relaxing because I always have a good first half of the race but then I tense up," Charles said. "This week I really wanted to make sure I was relaxing my arms and focusing on my turnover. I was happy with today's results. Any time I can go out and run a PR or a season-best is ideal and in front of the home crowd was awesome."
The Cougar men ended the day with a highly competitive high jump as sophomore
Peyton Fredrickson won with a PR leap of 6-11 1/2 (2.12m).
Keelan Halligan took second place with a PR height of 6-9 1/2 (2.07m) with
Max English and
Cole Smith tied for fourth after clearing 6-5 1/2 (1.97m).
"All season long I've been plagued by injury so I'm glad today was the day I stepped up and really performed," Fredrickson said. "I want to clear seven-feet and I had really good attempts at 7-feet and 1/4 inch today. From here to Pac-12s to West Region my goal is to become a seven-foot jumper."

"This was an outstanding meet. We've battled through some conditions throughout the season and we came up with some great weather and absolutely incredible performances. This may be the best meet we've had of the entire season," WSU Director of Cross Country/Track & Field
Wayne Phipps said. "We had some fantastic performances today:
Regyn Gaffney coming close to the school record in the 100 meters,
Atina Kamasi breaking the freshman school record in the javelin,
Kiana Davis and Greer in the triple jump and the list goes on and on. We had all five hammer guys PR and I don't know of any event in any school that that ever happens this late in the season. There are not words to describe how amazingly the kids competed today. I think we are in a perfect position as we continue to progress throughout the season and really ready for our championship portion of the season with the Pac-12s, NCAA first round and national championships."
"We are a week away from the multi events for the Pac-12 and we have two of the top heptathletes in the entire nation in
Liz Harper and
Alissa Brooks-Johnson. Alissa has her national qualifier pretty much sealed up and we're hoping to get Liz there as well."
The Pac-12 Track & Field Combined Events Championships take place May 6-7, in Corvallis, and the Pac-12 Championships conclude May 13-14, in Eugene.
