Cougars Beat No. 30 Huskies With 11th-Inning Walk-Off Walk

Box Score
PULLMAN, Wash. – Cory Meyer drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the 11th inning to give Washington State a 5-4 victory over No. 30 Washington in the series-opener at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.

The Cougars (17-18, 3-10 Pac-12) tallied 15 hits led by junior first baseman James Rudkin who recorded four hits and drove in two runs while junior reliever Scotty Sunitsch picked up the win with 3.2 scoreless innings while striking out three. Washington (20-15, 7-6 Pac-12) erased a 4-1 WSU lead with three runs in the eighth inning before surrendering two hits and two walks in the final frame.

The Cougars put a runner on third in the opening frame after Andres Alvarez walked, moved to second a bunt and to third on a wild pitch but a pair of strike outs left him at third.

In the fourth, Washington put two runners on with one out to chase WSU starter Damon Jones. Cougar junior reliever Colby Nealy ended the threat with a strikeout and a foul out.

WSU took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as designated hitter Blake Clanton drove a 1-1 pitch just short of the centerfield wall for a leadoff double. Danny Sinatro bunted Clanton over to third before freshman catcher Cal Waterman brought home Clanton with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Huskies tied things up with a solo homer to left in the sixth inning. The Cougars received a couple impressive defensive plays in the inning as third baseman Shane Matheny made a nice play on the run and right fielder JJ Hancock threw out a runner at second after he tried to stretch a base hit into a double. Senior lefthander Trenton Dupre came out the bullpen and got the final out of the inning with a fly out.

Washington State answered back with run in the sixth as Rudkin pulled a base hit through the left side to give WSU a 2-1 lead. Plew led off the inning with line drive single to centerfield and moved up to second on a groundout. Matheny was then intentionally walked to put runners on first and second for Rudkin who pulled the first pitch he saw into left field to score Plew from second. Hancock followed with a base hit to load the baes but UW ended the inning with a strikeout and a lineout.

In the seventh, Waterman lined a single off the leaping third baseman's glove and into left field. Alvarez bunted Waterman up to second who later moved to third on a groundout. With two outs, Justin Harrer beat out an infield single to the third baseman, allowing Waterman to score for a 3-1 lead. Matheny followed with a single through the right side to put runners on the corners for Rudkin who singled back up the middle for his third hit of the night, driving in Harrer for a 4-1 Cougar advantage.

Washington rallied back with three runs in the eighth, using a two-run homer and a pinch-hit RBI-single back up the middle to tie the game at 4-4 off the Cougar bullpen.

The Cougars loaded the bases in the ninth but UW forced a run out at home after getting a ground ball to shortstop with infield in and ended the inning with a fly out to right field.

Both teams were held scoreless in the tenth inning and Sunitsch continued to dominate, firing a perfect 11th inning before the Cougars won in the bottom half. Plew led off the inning with a single through the right side and Harrer bunted him up to second base. Matheny was intentionally walked for a third time to set up first and second with one out. Rudkin lined a single to left but Plew was thrown out at home for the second out. Hancock was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Meyer who drew a walk on four pitches, forcing Matheny home as the winning run.

The series continues Saturday at 4 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
