WSU Completes San Diego Crew Classic

The Second Varsity Eight and Open Eight Finished Third in Their Grand-Final Races

SAN DIEGO – No. 15 Washington State University rowing wrapped up racing at the San Diego Crew Classic, Sunday, on Mission Bay at San Diego. The second varsity eight and the open eight grabbed third-place finishes in Grand Final races on the regatta's final day.

"We had ok rows this weekend," said WSU head coach Jane LaRiviere. "There's lots of room for improvement. We identified areas that we need to work on, so that's what we will do this week."
 
The second varsity eight (coxswain – Ellie Burg, Emily Morrow, Brittany Brooks, Chloe Rogers, Ivy Elling Quaintance, Jenna Kennedy, Lori VerMurlen, Jessi Howe, Taija Thompson) was first to the water, Sunday. The Cougars were tight with Tennessee down the 2,000-meter course, in a battle for third, crossing at 6:43.49. No. 12 Wisconsin finished five seconds ahead of WSU, and No. 6 Texas took the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Memorial Trophy at a time of 6:35.15. The Cougars finished ahead of Pac-12 crews No. 13 USC (fifth) and UCLA (sixth).
 
WSU's varsity eight (coxswain – Jenna Mangiagli, Emily Thomson, Isabella Watt, Nicole Hare, Lucie Weissova, Ieva Adomaviciute, Paige Danielson, Kristel Tohu, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei) was locked in a close race with No. 12 Wisconsin for third in the Jessop-Whittier Cup Grand Final. The Badgers out-stroked the Cougars by two seconds, with WSU finishing fourth at 6:29.37. The Cougars defeated British Columbia and UCLA. No. 6 Texas won the Jessop-Whittier Cup at a time of 6:16.73, four seconds ahead of second-place No. 13 USC.
 
The Cougar varsity four (coxswain – Mikaelyn Davis, Kamila Ondrackova, Renee Kemp, Jessica Newson, Rosalina Torcivia) fought for fourth with fellow Pac-12 crew, UCLA, in the race for the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup. The Bruins just edged WSU for the fourth-place finish, and WSU crossed fifth at 7:36.71. The Cougars finished ahead of San Diego. No. 13 USC, No. 6 Texas, and No. 12 Wisconsin battled hard to the end of the race, with USC crossing first at 7:15.03. Texas and Wisconsin were within four seconds of the cup-winning Trojans.
 
WSU's open eight (coxswain- Hannah Welzbacker, Grace Arnis, Jill Hannink, Sara Brevick, Miranda Armstrong, Miranda Strickland, Codi Swenson, Mahal Johnson, Sue Yu) rounded out the weekend's racing, vying for the Carley Copley Cup. For the second-straight day, the Stanford lightweight won the race, this time to earn the Carley Copley Cup. WSU finished third in the Grand Final behind No. 13 USC. In a close call, WSU was able to fend off San Diego, crossing at 7:04.05. San Diego finished at 7:04.06, with just a split second separating the crews. WSU also defeated UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, and Colorado in the race.
 
The Cougars continue their spring season on Dexter Lake at Lowell, Ore. for the Oregon State Classic against Pac-12 opponents Oregon State and UCLA, Saturday, April 8.
