Late Inning Surge Lifts Cal Past WSU

BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington State suffered a 7-2 defeat after California scored six runs in the seventh inning at Evans Diamond Saturday evening.
 
WSU (14-10, 1-4 Pac-12) took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning before California (11-13, 3-5 Pac-12) scored once in the sixth and six in the seventh to take the second game of the series. In the seventh, the Bears took advantage of two walks, two hit by pitches and three hits in the inning to take the lead.
 
The Cougars received a solid starting pitching performance from junior Ryan Walker who struck out three, allowed two earned runs on five hits in six innings. WSU backed Walker with a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth inning. James Rudkin singled to right field and Blake Clanton doubled to center to score Rudkin and Andres Alvarez later doubled in Clanton for a 2-0 lead.
 
Walker didn't allow a baserunner past second before Cal scored in the sixth and later erupted for six in the seventh.
 
Rudkin tallied two hits, extending his on-base streak to 21 games, and Justin Harrer also recorded two hits.
 
The series continues Sunday at 1 p.m.
