Molina And Hailey Take Home All-Conference Honors

The Cougs earned a pair of honorable mention nods in 2016-17.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshman Chanelle Molina and junior Caila Hailey received All-Pac-12 honors, conference commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday. Molina earned an honorable mention to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team while Hailey earned her second-straight honorable mention to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team.

Despite playing just six conference games before suffering a season ending injury, Molina made her mark in the minds of the Pac-12's coaches earning her spot among the best freshmen in the conference. A two-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, Molina was averaging 12.8 points on 51.5% shooting after scoring in double-figures in 12-straight games, the second longest streak for a Cougar freshman in program history. Her 51.5% shooting ranks as the best average ever for a freshman in program history while ranking ninth best all-time overall. Additionally, she was shooting 43.1% from deep, the best mark of any freshman while ranking tied for third all-time in a single-season.At the helm, Molina averaged a team-best 3.7 assists per game (63 total). In her six Pac-12 contests, Molina was even better averaging 17.3 ppg on 51.9% shooting. During her run early in Pac-12 play, the first-year Coug tied the Wazzu freshmen record for scoring with a 33-point effort in the Cougs' upset of #7 UCLA. Her efforts against the Bruins earned her the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Week.

Anchoring the Cougar defense and asked to shadow the oppositions top perimeter threat, Hailey finished the regular season with a team best 55 steals, averaging 1.9 spg which ranked seventh in the Pac-12. Led by Hailey, the Cougs finished the regular season ranked No. 36 in the nation in forcing turnovers at 19.4 per game. They did their work in the passing lanes as WSU ranked No. 27 in the nation in steals and averaged 10.2 per game. In addition to her work on the perimeter, Hailey was one of the Cougars' top rebounders as she grabbed 4.3 rpg, fourth best among all WSU players. 

The No. 7 seeded Cougars (11-18, 6-12 Pac-12) will face No. 10 seed Colorado (15-14, 5-13 Pac-12) in the 2017 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament, Thursday at KeyArena in Seattle, Wash. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at wsucougars.com.
