November 11, 2017 | Volleyball
WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE…
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team (15-13 overall, 4-12 in Pac-12) battled No. 2 Stanford (22-3, 15-1) Saturday night in front of 1,050 fans in Bohler Gym before losing with set scores of 19-25, 32-30, 25-16, 25-21.
Â
Junior Taylor Mims led the match with a double-double of 25 kills, equaling her career-high, and 14 digs with four blocks. Ella Lajos added eight kills (.316) and led the team with six blocks. Jocelyn Urias tallied seven kills and five blocks. Alexis Dirige tied with Stanford's Morgan Hentz for the match-high of 23 digs. Penny Tusa also had a double-double with 10 assists and 10 digs. Ashley Brown and Nicole Rigoni combined for 29 assists. Dirige and Brown served the two Cougars aces.
Â
The Cardinal out-hit WSU 62 to 53 with a .222 hitting percentage to the Cougars .169. Stanford also edged WSU in digs 79 to 70 and aces, three to two but the Cougars claimed the blocking category with 13 team blocks to Stanford's 11.
Â
WHY & HOW...
WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said, "I'm very proud of the way we battled. I think we got out to a great start. We served extremely well in the first. Lost a heartbreaker in the second in extra points. We threw some people into the match and I thought they did a nice job and we fought until the end against a very, very good Stanford team. I'm proud of the overall effort of the team and hopefully we can just keep fighting."
Â
"I think it was a good weekend and overall our offense was a lot better than it has been the last few weeks and that is a positive that we can carry on to our matches at the Oregon schools."
