Cougars to Open Fall Season at Home

The WSU men's golf team will host the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at Palouse Ridge Golf Course.

THIS WEEK: The Washington State University men's golf team will open the fall season hosting the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate, Sept. 12-13, at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

THE COURSE: WSU's Palouse Ridge Golf Club, a 7,308-yard track at par 71, is located on campus and was the host for the 2015 Men's Pac-12 Golf Championships…the course opened in Aug. 2008 and has been named to Golfweek's Top College Courses List for the last three consecutive years...teams will play 36 holes Monday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m…the tournament concludes Tuesday with 18-holes beginning at 8 a.m.

THE TOURNAMENT: This year marks the tournament's eighth occurrence in Pullman, but the fifth year that Itani Quality Homes has sponsored…Washington State has won the title every year except for 2011 and 2014…in 2009, Kevin Tucker tied for individual honors…Hank Frame placed in the top 25 all four years of his career (2009-12) and won the tournament title as a senior in 2012…in 2013, senior Blake Snyder captured the individual title…in 2014, senior Sang Lee earned his first career individual title…in 2015, sophomore Derek Bayley won his first career individual title and tied the previous tournament record set in 2010…the Cougars set a school record for 54-holes in 2015 with an 819 (-33) breaking their previous record set in 2010…WSU's third-round score of 278 (-10) in 2012 is the best third round mark in tournament history.

THE FIELD: Joining WSU in the 14-team field will be British Columbia, Cal State Fullerton, Gonzaga, Idaho, Pacific, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Seattle, South Dakota, Utah, Utah Valley, Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Western Washington.

THIS YEAR'S COUGARS: The Cougars welcome two golfers to the team for the 2016-17 season, including freshmen Nicklaus Chiam and Daniel Kolar…seven golfers return from last season.

LAST TIME AT THE ITANI QUALITY HOMES COLLEGIATE: The Cougars finished first at the tournament, breaking their previous tournament record set in 2010…Bayley led the team by earning his first career individual title, shooting 12-under par (201), and tying the previous tournament record set by Damien Telles of Idaho in 2010…current senior Nick Mandell tied for fourth with a career-best finish of 207 (-6)…current sophomore Grant Cole tied for ninth (-4, 209) and current sophomore AJ Armstrong tied for 16th with current junior Zach Anderson (-2, 211)…senior Evan Omelia tied for 19th (-1, 212).

REPRESENTING WASHINGTON STATE: Competing for the Cougars will be freshman Nicklaus Chiam, junior Derek Bayley, sophomores Grant Cole and AJ Armstrong, and junior Zach Anderson. Senior Nick Mandell, sophomore Aaron Whalen, and junior Brian Mogg will compete as individuals.

COACHING STAFF: The men's golf team is led by first-year head coach, Dustin White…before accepting the head coach position, White was an assistant coach for WSU for three years…White golfed at Washington State from 1999-2003…new to the coaching staff as assistant coach is Chris Gilbert…Gilbert graduated from Kansas in 2013 as a two-time individual medalist and the only Kansas golfer to make two separate appearances at the NCAA Regionals…Gilbert turned pro in 2013 before accepting the assistant coach position.
