Weaver Records Hat Trick in 5-0 Win over North Dakota State

PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshman Morgan Weaver scored three goals while senior Kaitlyn Johnson assisted on a Cougar school-record four scores to lead Washington State to a 5-0 victory over North Dakota State Sunday evening in front of 1,006 fans at Lower Soccer Field.

With the win the Cougars improve to 3-2-0 on the season while the Bison even its record at 3-3-0.

Weaver entered the game leading the team in shots this season but had yet to put one in the net. It didn't take long to get her first as 1 minute, 47 seconds into the contest Kelsee Crenshaw sent a cross from the right side to Kaitlyn Johnson on the far post, who redirected the header into the box where Weaver one-timed the ball past Bison goalkeeper Monica Polgar for the early 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later, Kaitlyn Johnson sent a cross near the end line into a streaking Kailiana Johnson in the box who chested it to the near post past Polgar for the 2-0 lead. In the 39th minute Weaver made it 3-0 as Kaitlyn Johnson sent a cross to the far post where the Cougar freshman drilled the ball into the top of the net, the second-straight multi-goal game for WSU as sophomore Alysha Overland had a pair in Friday's 2-1 win over Montana.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Weaver struck again, this time finishing a Kaitlyn Johnson thru-ball in the box for the first Cougar hat trick since Eileen Maes had three in a season-opening, 3-1 win at Hawaii, Aug. 19, 2011.

Freshman Katie Jones closed out the scoring in the 87th minute as she took a pass from Shayna Whieldon inside the box and sent a low drive past Polgar for her first goal of the season.

On the night the Cougars outshot the Bison 29-3, the most shots by a Todd Shulenberger coached-team at WSU. Kaitlyn Johnson's four assists eclipsed the school-record of three held by five players, most recently Michaela Castain, who assisted on all three in a 3-1 win at California in 2013.

Washington State is next in action when it travels to Fort Worth, Texas to face TCU Friday at 5 p.m. PT. The Horned Frogs were receiving votes in the most recent NSCAA poll.
