LAS VEGAS – Bara Michalkova and Melisa Ates won the consolation finals in their respective singles flights to conclude play at the 2016 UNLV Invitational Sunday.
WSU's Michalkova took home the consolation first flight after defeating Monica Mitta of Southern Alabama, 6-1, 6-0. Ates earned the consolation crown for the fourth singles flight posting a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Fresno State's Olivia Noble.
Two Cougars fell in the fight for third place. In the second singles flight, Aneta Miksovska fell to Long Beach State's Haley Thompson, 6-2, 6-2, while freshman Ege Tomey battled against Alina Zolotareva of Southern Alabama, falling three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
In the third singles flight, senior Victoria Matejevic won the first set 6-0 against Long Beach State's Laura Eales, and then earned the win after Eales retired during the second set.
The sophomore duo of Michalkova and Miksovska earned seventh place in the first doubles flight by defeating Long Beach State's pair of Hayley Thompson and Lena Pacholski, 8-5.
In the second doubles flight, WSU's team of Matejevic and Ates fell to Emma Wilson and Juliane Triebe of Fresno State, 8-7, dropping the third place match.
The Cougars are next in action Sept. 30 when they host the annual Play With a Cougar event at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
