Mandell, Cougars Win Tournament at Palouse Ridge

Three Cougars finished in the top-5.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University men's golf won the team title and senior Nick Mandell took home the individual title at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate, Tuesday, at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

As a team, the Cougars finished 10-under par with a three-round score of 842. WSU finished 19 strokes ahead of second-place Utah (+9, 861). Sacramento State rounded out the top three at 10-over par with a score of 862, one stroke behind Utah in the 14-team field.

"From top to bottom, our performance was fantastic," WSU head coach Dustin White said. "Having eight guys finish in the top-25, I don't think we could've asked for a better performance. It was a true team effort."

In the best performance of his career, senior Nick Mandell finished first as an individual with a three-round score of 210 (-3). Mandell carded 10 birdies and an eagle throughout the tournament.

"It's awesome to finish first at our home golf course here as a senior," golfer Nick Mandell said. "I couldn't imagine anything better."

Junior, and last year's tournament champion, Derek Bayley tied for second with Idaho's Ethan Atherstone at 2-under par (211), one stroke behind first place Mandell. Bayley tied his best single-round score in the second round shooting 65 (-6).

In his debut for the Cougars, freshman Nicklaus Chiam tied for fourth at 1-under par, with a three-round score of 212. Chiam recorded 15 birdies through three rounds.

Juniors Zach Anderson and Brian Mogg, along with sophomore AJ Armstrong tied for sixth even with par in a six-way tie, with a three-round score of 213. Mogg, who competed as an individual, carded an eagle in the third round, sealing his best career finish.

Sophomore Grant Cole tied for 14th with a score of 215 (+1) after shooting even with par in the final round. Fellow sophomore Aaron Whalen, who competed as an individual, rounded out the top-25 tied for 21st, shooting 4-over par with a three-round score of 217.

Next up, the Cougars will compete at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. hosted by New Mexico, Sept. 23-24, at The Championship Golf Course.
