PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped an 11-5 decision to the University of Utah in the second game of a Pac-12 Conference series at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday.
The Cougars (15-26, 8-15 Pac-12) received two hits from Dugan Shirer and a two-run home run from Patrick McGrath. Utah (17-24, 12-8 Pac-12) recorded 14 hits and a three-run fifth and three-run ninth to even the series at 1-1 after WSU took Saturday's series-opener.
Utah used four hits in the first inning to push two runs across before the Cougars evened things up in the bottom half of the inning. Shirer got things going with a one-out line drive single to centerfield and McGrath followed with a two-out two-run blast over the wall in right centerfield for his third homer of the season.
The Utes answered with a run in the second on a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 advantage. Washington State came back with two more runs in the third on a pair of bases-loaded walks for a 4-3 lead but Utah pushed three runs across in the fifth inning, using two hits, two walks and an error to take a 6-4 advantage.
The Cougars cut the lead to one in the sixth as Trek Stemp led off the inning with a single up the middle, then moved to second on a walk and later moved to third on a passed ball before scampering home on a wild pitch. Again, Utah answered with a run in the seventh inning, using a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to push lead back to two, 7-5.
Utah added another in the eighth and three more in the ninth before the bullpen sealed things up in the ninth for a the 11 win. WSU starting pitcher Ian Hamilton allowed six on nine hits and struck out four in 4.2 innings. Utah starter Dalton Carroll picked up the win after allowing two earned on eight hits in five innings.
The series wraps up Monday at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
