Cougar Rowing Finishes San Diego Crew Classic
April 03, 2016 | Rowing
SAN DIEGO – In the second day of competition at the San Diego Crew Classic, the No. 11 Washington State women's rowing team battled tough competition in the Grand Finals, which featured an hour-long fog delay, Sunday morning at Mission Bay.
Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said, “Today was a great example of why the heats in San Diego are critical. It is important to win those close battles. The second varsity eight and varsity four had solid races yesterday, but finishing in second means an outside lane. Lane six crushed us today. We will be better for it down the road. The varsity eight had a good race, they raced very tough today.”
Washington State's novice eight (coxswain- Taylor Brown, stroke- Sara Brevick, Sheena Polman, Paige Danielson, Megan Lee, Grace Arnis, Katie Weir, Colleen Gibbons, bow- Kaisha Davis) finished second in the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final with a time of 7:26.795. No. 9 Texas won the Laurel V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy and finished the race in 7:10.643. No. 20 UCLA (7:31.288), Minnesota (7:32.496), San Diego (7:44.922), UC San Diego (8:08.732) and Santa Clara (8:35.314) finished behind Washington State.
In the Women's Collegiate Varsity Invitational Grand Final, WSU's varsity eight (coxswain- Rebecca Burns, stroke- Morgan Cathrea, Jordan Watson, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Savannah Davison, Kim Coon, Emily Thomson, Isabella Watt, bow- Emily Morrow) finished in 6:58.477 and took fifth behind No. 2 California (6:49.468), No. 9 Texas (6:51.682), No. 14 USC (6:51.772) and No. 13 Wisconsin (6:54.772). USC leaves the regatta with the Jessop-Whittier Cup. No. 18 Gonzaga (7:01.894), San Diego (7:02.866) and No. 20 UCLA (7:10.133) finished behind Washington State.
In the second event of the day for the Cougars, the second varsity eight (coxswain- Jenna Mangiagli, stroke- Jessica Brougham, Taija Thompson, Chloe Rogers, Sarah Steger, Jessi Howe, Lucie Weissova, Jessica Newson, bow- Brittany Brooks) placed sixth in the Women's Collegiate Second Varsity Grand Final. Washington State finished with a time of 7:17.478. No. 2 California won the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy with a time of 6:53.673.
The Cougar women's varsity four (coxswain- Ellie Burg, Codi Swenson, Kotryna Lasaite, Jenna Kennedy, bow- Lori VerMurlen) finished the 2,000-meter course with a time of 8:29.552 and took sixth place in the Women's Collegiate Varsity Four Grand Final. No. 2 California won the Grand Final and took home the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup.
The Washington State women's rowing team will next compete against Washington at Seattle in dual action Saturday, April 9. Races are slated to begin at 9 a.m.
