PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped a 6-2 decision in the second game of its Pac-12 Conference series with USC at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars dropped to 12-23 overall and 5-12 in conference play. Trek Stemp singled home a run in the ninth to extend his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 10 straight games. USC (18-19, 7-7 Pac-12) used a two-run sixth to break a 1-1 tie before tacking on three more in the ninth. Trojan starting pitcher Kyle Davis earned the win after surrendering one run while striking out nine in eight innings.
Both teams pushed across runs in the opening frame as USC scored on an RBI-single and the Cougars evened things up at 1-1 after Dugan Shirer scored on a wild pitch. Washington State put runners on second and third with one out after singles by JJ Hancock and Shane Matheny but the Trojans ended the threat with a pair of groundouts.
Freshman reliever Chandler Greenfield provided a big boost for the Cougars, taking over from starter Ryan Ward to start the second inning and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and struck out one. WSU had another chance in the fifth as Shirer drew a walk and stole second but was stranded after a strikeout.
USC got to reliever Colby Nealy in the sixth, leading off the inning with a double just past a diving third baseman Matheny before homering down the right field lone for a 3-1 lead. The Trojans again went to the long ball in the ninth, hitting a pair of home runs in a three-run inning to cap a 6-1 victory.
