PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State dropped a 10-6 contest in the series-finale with Utah Valley University at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon.
WSU (4-8) erased a 6-0 deficit with two runs in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth inning but Utah Valley (7-6) rallied back with single runs in the sixth and seventh before adding two more in the eighth. Sophomore Derek Chapman recorded two hits, drove in three runs and stole a base. Cameron Frost and Weston Hatten each collected two hits and Justin Harrer scored twice for the Cougars. Six Washington State pitchers combined to allow 14 hits, six earned runs while recording 10 strikeouts.
Utah Valley scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the second before the Cougars answered with a pair of runs in the third. Harrer led off the WSU third with a walk and Ty Johnson singled before Shane Matheny bunted both runners up to second and third. Chapman followed with an infield single that scored Harrer and Jack Strunc brought home Johnson with sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Freshman reliever Chandler Greenfield pitched scoreless third and fourth innings before the Cougar offense heated up. Wes Leow led off the fourth with a single back up the middle, Weston Hatten followed with a base hit through the left side and Harrer walked to load the bases. Johnson brought home a run with a sacrifice fly and Chapman came up with a two-out two-run single to centerfield, cutting the Utah Valley lead to 6-5.
The Cougars tied things up in the fifth as Frost drove a pitch the opposite way off the right field wall for a two-out triple. He came in to score as Leow reached on a Utah Valley error, evening things up at 6-6.
The Wolverines took a one-run lead with a two-out RBI double in the sixth and added another run in the seventh on a two-out infield single for an 8-6 advantage.
Utah Valley reliever Logan Hold picked up the win after allowing one unearned run over three innings and Garrett Bowman picked a save with three scoreless innings. Reliever Layne Bruner suffered the loss after allowing one earned run and striking out three in two innings of work.
GAME NOTES…Trek Stemp, out of the lineup because he under the weather, pinch-hit in the ninth and flew out to left field, snapping his 11-game hitting streak…WSU hosts Northeastern University (Mass.) for a four-game series beginning Thursday at 4 p.m.
