STANFORD, Calif. – Washington State suffered a 5-0 defeat in the rubber game of the Pac-12 Conference series at Stanford University Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (8-14, 1-5 Pac-12) received two-hit games from Trek Stemp, Justin Harrer and Mason Cerrillo but left 10 men on bases throughout the afternoon. The Cardinal (12-6, 2-1 Pac-12) used a two-run homer in a three-run third inning and tacked on another run in the sixth and seventh inning to back an impressive outing by starter Chris Catellanos who pitched seven shutout innings to help clinch the series.
Washington State starting pitcher Parker McFadden sat the Cardinal down in order in the first two innings, recording three strikeouts during that stretch. The freshman right-hander ran into trouble in the third, allowing a triple and the two-run home run to start the frame and another run came across later in the inning on a groundout. McFadden exited after three innings, allowing the three runs on three hits and struck out three while walking just one.
The Cougars struggled to get anything going against Castellanos who scattered five hits (all singles), struck out five and walked one to earn the win. WSU loaded the bases in the eighth inning but the Cardinal bullpen ended the threat with a strikeout.
GAME NOTES…Stemp extended his hitting streak to 10 games and has recorded a hit in all 21 of his starts this season…the Cougars return to Pullman to host Arizona State in a three-game series beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.
