PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State tennis team opened and closed Saturday in similar fashion. The Cougars came out with a 7-0 showing against Northern Arizona. With the victory the Cougars improve to 8-0 on the season.
The Cougars wasted no time jumping out on top. For the seventh time in eight matches this season, the Cougars captured the opening doubles point. No. 2
Donika Bashota and
Victoria Matejevic easily defeated Marta Lewandowska and Emelia Box 6-0 followed by
Maria Biryukova and
Trang Huynh's dominating 6-1 win over Hanneke Lodewijks and Blanka Szavay at No. 1. The No. 3 match between WSU's
Aneta Miksovska and
Barbora Michalkova and NAU's Sara Brown and Jordan Denesik was stopped with WSU leading 4-1.
In singles play, Bashota quickly increased WSU's lead to 2-0 as she was the first off the court following a 6-1, 6-0 win over Szavay at No. 2. Huynh made it 3-0 after she won a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Denesik at No. 4. Michalkova clinched the victory for WSU as she posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lewandowska at No. 3, giving WSU an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
With the team victory secured, No. 1 Biryukova continued the Cougars winning streak taking down Lodewijks by a score of 6-3, 6-3. The win marks Biryukova's 78th victory moving her into ninth place on WSU's top-10 singles victories list.
At No. 5, Miksovska cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Granville, while Matejevic defeated Box in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6.
The Cougars are on the road for the first time in dual-match play next weekend. WSU begins play Saturday, Feb. 13, against Memphis at 1 p.m., and face off with host #59 UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m.
