Cougars Fall To Texas State in Game Two

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Washington State dropped a 10-1 contest to Texas State University in the second game of the season-opening series at Bobcat Ballpark Saturday afternoon. Game three of the series is set for 11 a.m. (PT), Sunday.

Texas State used 13 hits to take the second straight game over the Cougars to start the season. Sophomore Derek Chapman and junior Wes Leow each led WSU with two hits and freshman catcher Ty Johnson picked up his first collegiate hit.

Washington State put two runners on in the second inning as junior Cameron Frost was hit by a pitch and junior Wes Leow lined a single to centerfield but Texas State held off the threat by getting a popout and a strikeout.

A couple tough bounces led to a six-run frame for the Bobcats in their half of the second. With two outs, a softly hit ground ball hit back up the middle just tipped off the glove of a diving shortstop Justin Harrer and went into the outfield to allow one run to score and the inning to continue. TSU added four more hits in the inning including one that took a big hop high off the outfield grass and over a Cougar outfielder, bringing home two runs.

Texas State added one more in the third after a leadoff triple and sacrifice fly for a 7-0 advantage before adding two more in the fourth.

The Cougar bullpen settled in as sophomore right-hander Colby Nealy pitched two scoreless fifth and sixth innings. A pair of freshmen followed with solid collegiate debuts by right-handers Kevin Calderhead who surrendered one unearned run in the seventh and Chandler Greenfield who pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Freshmen Justin Harrer picked up his first career RBI with an RBI-groundout in the ninth.

Bobcat starter Jeremy Hallonquist picked up the win after pitching seven scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out two.
