Santa Barbara, Calif. – The Washington State tennis team remains undefeated after defeating Memphis 4-0 on a neutral court, Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara.
The No. 74 Cougars began the match with doubles play. The No. 2 duo of
Maria Biryukova and
Trang Huynh had little trouble against Kathryn Hughes and Marta Morga posting a 6-1 win, while the No. 3 pair of Barbara Michalkova and
Aneta Miksovska clinched the doubles point for WSU, besting Gabrielle Paul and Tara McElroy, 6-2.
Donika Bashota and
Lize Leenknecht, at No. 1 doubles, trailed 5-4 against Hanna Sohn and Janina Berres before play was stopped.
In singles play, No. 2
Donika Bashota continued her undefeated season posting a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Kathryn Hughes, while at No. 4,
Trang Huynh outdueled Janina Berres with an easy 6-1, 6-3 victory, giving WSU the 3-0 lead.
At No. 5, Miksovska clinched the match for the Cougars by defeating Gabrielle Paul, posting a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory, giving WSU the insurmountable 4-0 lead.
Three matches were halted once the team outcome was decided. At No. 1, Biryukova was up on Sohn, 6-3, 3-6, 3-0, while Michalkova was even with Morga at No. 3, 1-6, 6-4, 2-2. At No. 6, Matejevic won the first set, but trailed in the second, 7-5, 3-4.
