SEATTLE – The Washington State University women's rowing team won a heat at the Head of the Lake and finished second in two others, Sunday morning at Seattle. The Cougars' third varsity eight rowed to a victory, while the varsity and second varsity crews posted competitive performances under beautiful conditions.
 
"Everyone raced competitively today," Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "We are looking forward to strong winter training and will be excited to get back on the water in spring competition."
 
In the Women's Collegiate 3V 8+ heat, Washington State took home the top finishing time. The Cougars (Cox – Hannah Welzbacker, Jill Hannink, Samantha Eilers, Rosalina Torcivia, Jenna Kennedy, Kamila Ondrackova, Sue Yu, Sara Brevick, Brittany Brooks) raced the course at 19:35.956, finishing nearly a minute faster than second-place University of British Columbia. The Cougars also out-stroked Portland, Western Washington, and Seattle.
 
The Cougars opened the day with the varsity eight competing in the Championship Women's 8+, sponsored by Pocock Racing Shells. WSU (Cox – Jenna Mangiagli, Ieva Adomaviciute, Lucie Weissova, Nicole Hare , Ivy Elling Quaintance, Paige Danielson, Jess Brougham, Chloe Rogers, Mihaela-Teodora Berindei) competed against Pac-12 opponents Washington and Stanford in the head race. The Cougars also rowed in the same heat as Gonzaga, who will visit Wawawai Landing to open the spring season. WSU out-raced both the Bulldogs and the Cardinal, finishing the three-mile course at 18:05.330, six seconds ahead of Stanford and 56 seconds ahead of Gonzaga. Washington won the heat, finishing narrowly ahead of the Cougars at 17:57.547.
 
The WSU second varsity eight also was edged by the Huskies in the Women's Collegiate JV 8+. The Cougars (Cox – Ellie Burg, Jessica Newson, Taija Thompson, Kristel Tohu, Renee Kemp, Jessi Howe, Lori VerMurlen, Emily Thomson, Isabella Watt) overcame a time deficit to Pac-12 foe Stanford during the second half of the heat to cross the finish line ahead of the Cardinal at 18:50.555. Washington won the heat by 14 seconds, while the Cougars also defeated the University of British Columbia, Gonzaga, Portland, Western Washington, and Oregon.
 
Washington State heads into its winter training and will open the spring season, March 25 at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River in dual action against Gonzaga.
