Hare and Elling Quaintance Win, Cougar Rowing Impresses at Burnaby

The Cougars Placed Four Pairs in the 250-Meter Final

BURNABY, British Columbia – The Washington State University women's rowing team placed four pairs in the final 250-meter sprint at the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational, and senior Nicole Hare and freshman Ivy Elling Quaintance won the title of Regatta Champions, Saturday.

"It was a wet, soggy day, but the Cougs raced well," Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "All eight boats handled the conditions. This is a great little regatta, and is a lot of fun. We are looking forward to getting back in the big boats."

All eight WSU pairs were entered in the same 4,000-meter flight, and four of the duos qualified for the regatta's final 250-meter sprint, reserved for the top-six 4,000-meter finishers in each boat class.

Hare and Elling Quaintance came in second in the pair flight of the head race, completing the course at 16:10.65. Seniors Ieva Adomaviciute and Mihaela-Teodora Berindei took 26 more seconds, and crossed at 16:36.57, to take third over the 4,000-meter competition.

Hare and Elling Quaintance went on to win the 250-meter sprint in front of the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club's old grandstand, while Adomaviciute and Berindei finished third.

Sophomores Paige Danielson and Jess Brougham, who raced the 4,000-meter course at 16:44.70, and freshman Kamila Ondrackova and junior Lucie Weissova (16:45.10) also qualified for the 250-meter final. The pairs placed sixth and fourth in the final, respectively.

Seniors Chloe Rogers and Isabella Watt totaled a time of 17:09.14 over the 4,000-meter course, while sophomore Taija Thompson and junior Jessica Newson stopped the clock at 17:27.99.

All of the Cougar pairs finished in less than 17:36, with seniors Jessi Howe and Lori VerMurlen crossing at 17:31.25 and juniors Kristel Tohu and Jenna Kennedy completing the race at 17:35. 64, faster than three other pairs in the 15-boat heat.

Washington State returns to the water for fall competition with its larger crews and coxswains, Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Head of the Spokane, hosted by Gonzaga.
