STANFORD, Calif. – Washington State's Aneta Miksovska advanced in singles, while two doubles teams advanced at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
In singles action, Miksovska, a sophomore from Stamberk, Czech Republic, rallied in three sets to defeat Oregon's Daniela Nasser, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3, in the opening round. Miksovska advanced during the second round after hard fought 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Karina Vyrian of Sacramento State. Miksovska will face San Jose State's Sybille Gauvain in the third round Saturday.
Sophomore Bara Michalkova and newcomer Guzal Yusupova also posted singles victories during the opening round. Yusupova bested Santa Clara's Elizabeth Stephens, 6-1, 6-1, and then fell to the nation's No. 7-ranked Maegan Manasse of California, 7-5, 6-3. Michalkova won her first match 6-2, 7-6 (8), against Graciela Rosas of Gonzaga. Michalkova's next match pitted her against No. 8-seed of the nation's No. 1-ranked team in Stanford's Melissa Lord. Michalkova could not secure the match, leading to Lord's 6-0, 6-3 victory.
WSU senior Victoria Matejevic came up short to the No. 9 seeded Katerina Stloukalova of Fresno State, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Lejla Colic struggled against Oregon's Marlou Kluiving, falling 6-1, 6-0, while fellow newcomer Ege Tomey fell in a back and forth 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, decision to Miki Kobayashi of Washington.
In doubles action the pair of Ates and Matejevic soundly defeated Gonzaga's Graciala Rosas and Haruna Tsuruta, 8-2. The newly formed duo of Michalkova and Yusupova downed Pacific's Anneroos Nederstigt and Sabrina Rodriguez, 8-4, while Colic and Miksovska fell 8-3, to San Francisco's Shanna Dos Santos and Anna Sokiran.
