Aron Baynes Signs with the Detroit Pistons

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Former Washington State men's basketball standout, Aron Baynes, signed a multi-year contract with the NBA's Detroit Pistons, the organization announced Sunday. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

A native of Cairns, Australia, Baynes played for the Cougars for four seasons, from 2006-09, becoming the 30th Cougar to score 1,000 career points, accomplishing the feat March 7, 2009, WSU's regular-season finale that year. He finished his career with 1,064 points, ranking 25th on the all-time career scoring list. A 6-foot-10 center, Baynes helped lead the Cougars to back-to-back NCAA Tournament Appearances in 2007 and 2008, as WSU advanced to the 'Sweet 16' his junior season. During his senior season, the Cougars made their third-straight postseason appearance, advancing to the first round of the 2009 National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

Baynes joins the Pistons after two-and-a-half seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, which featured an NBA Championship in 2014. Baynes became just the second Cougar to win an NBA Championship with the Spurs' series victory over the Miami Heat in 2014. The 6-foot-10 center signed with the Spurs, Jan. 23, 2013 and appeared in 139 games, averaging 4.8 points and 3.6 rebounds an outing in 12.6 minutes played per game.

Baynes began his professional career in 2009-10 playing for Lietuvos Rytas of the Lithuanian Basketball League, a squad that went on to win the Lithuanian National Championship. He went on to play in Germany for EWE Baskets Oldenburg in 2010-11 before joining Ikaros Kallitheas in Greece the following season. Baynes has been a member of the Australian National Team, most recently competing at the 2014 FIBA World Championship in Turkey where he averaged 16.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 27.0 minutes in five games. Representing Australia in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he averaged 7.5 points and 3.3 rebounds while shooting .656 (21-for-32) from the field.
