PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State managed just one run on the day as Stanford completed a doubleheader sweep with scores of 9-0 and 3-1 in Pac-12 Conference play Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.
The Cougars ended the afternoon with a 28-27 record, 10-19 in Pac-12 play while Stanford moved to 24-31, 9-20 in conference action.
In the opener, Cougar starter Sean Hartnett (3-6) cruised through the first five innings, surrendering just one hit, until the Cardinal put up seven runs in the sixth. An error by shortstop Jack Strunc started the inning then Stanford's Zach Hoffpauir lined a bases-loaded double to center for the first two runs of the game. Jack Klein added an RBI double and Tommy Edman closed out the inning with a two-run single to right.
The inning ended the day for Hartnett, who allowed six hits in six innings with four strikeouts, as six of the seven runs he surrendered were unearned.
The Cougars collected just two hits in the game against Cardinal starter Brett Hanewich (4-6). Elliott Cooper and Ben Roberts managed singles to account for the Cougar offense as Hanewich went eight innings, striking out six against three walks, for the victory.
Stanford added single runs in the eighth and ninth to close out the scoring as Quinn Brodey tripled and scored on a wild pitch then Brody's RBI groundout plated the final run.
Edman led the Stanford attached with three hits and two RBI, part of a 12-hit game for the Cardinal.
In the second game, the Cardinal jumped out early, scoring a run in the first on three-straight two-out singles, the last by Austin Barr scoring Drew Jackson. Two more runs pushed the lead to 3-0 as Hoffpauir and Brodey added RBI doubles in the third.
The Cougars scored their lone run of the day in the third as Tyler McDowell led off with a double to right and came home on an RBI groundout off the bat of Derek Chapman.
Cougar starter Joe Pistorese (8-5) settled in after the first three innings and kept WSU close. He left in the top of the ninth with one out and runners on first and second. Sam Triece came on to induce an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam. In the bottom of the ninth P.J. Jones' two-out single was not enough as the Cardinal secured the sweep.
Pistorese went 8 1/3 innings, allowing three runs while striking out six in taking the loss. The senior ends his career as WSU's all-time leader in innings pitched and starts, and No. 10 in strikeouts.
The series concludes Sunday with the final game of the 2015 season for both teams. Washington State will recognize six seniors playing their final games at 11:50 a.m., with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
