PHOENIX, Ariz. – Ryan Kellogg threw a five-hit, complete-game shutout as No. 12 Arizona State opened the series with a 5-0 victory over Washington State Thursday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
After getting out of jams in the second and third when Washington State (27-24, 9-16) had a runner at third with less than two outs, Kellogg settled into a groove. Following a leadoff double by Cameron Frost to open the third, Kellogg retired 16 straight until a one-out single by Brennon Kaleiwahea in the eighth. His night ended with 11 strikeouts and no walks allowed as he improved to 8-1.
Arizona State (31-18, 16-9) jumped out first with two runs in the second inning. A pair of one-out singles and a fielding error by WSU centerfielder Derek Chapman put runners on second and third. Trevor Allen followed with a two-run single to left for the 2-0 advantage off Cougar starter Sean Hartnett.
The Sun Devils added a run in the seventh as R.J. Ybarra lined a two-out double down the line in left, scoring David Greer from third. One inning later ASU put the game away as Brian Serven pounded a two-run double to left off reliever Colby Nealy, scoring Colby Woodmansee and Coltin Gerhart for the 5-0 lead.
Hartnett suffered the loss as he fell to 3-5 on the season after going seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Offensively the Cougars managed five hits on the game, two from Frost.
The series continues Friday from Phoenix Municipal Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. and will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
