MARICOPA, Ariz. – The Washington State women's golf team fired a final round score of 8-over 296 to finish second at the 22-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic Tuesday at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. The Cougars finished the three-round event at 31-over, 895, seven strokes behind tournament winner Nevada and four strokes ahead of third-place Lamar.
It marked the third top-five finish of the season for the Cougars and their highest finish since a second-place showing at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational in Tacoma, Wash., Oct. 14, 2014.
Senior Kristen Rue led the way as she fired a 1-over 73 Tuesday, completing the three-round event at 4-over 220, tied for fifth overall. Rue's round included four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on seven and eight, along with a birdie on the par-5 16th before closing her round with two pars.
Freshman Alivia Brown finished Tuesday with a 3-over 75, posting a three-round score of 6-over 222, tied for 13th overall. Sophomore Cherokee Kim had her best round of the tournament Tuesday, carding a 1-over 73. Kim finished the two-day event with at 9-over, 225, tied for 22nd.
Junior Nani Yanagi closed her round with birdie as she shot a 3-over 75 Tuesday, closing her tournament with a three-round score of 14-over, 230, tied for 45th. Junior Rachel Lewis shot an 83 Tuesday, ending her tournament at 20-over, 236 and tied for 71st.
The Cougars are next in action, Monday, April 13, at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif.
