Sagdal Powers Cougars Past Spartans, 14-2

PULLMAN, Wash.Ian Sagdal had four hits, including his fourth home run of the season, and Joe Pistorese picked up his third-straight win as Washington State cruised past San Jose State, 14-2, Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Leading 3-2 midway through the game, the Cougars broke it open in the sixth with a five-run frame.  Derek Chapman and Cooper Elliott each had RBI singles before Sagdal had the big blow, a three-run home run off reliever Josh Goldberg. It marked Sagdal's fifth multi-RBI game of the season and tied him for the team lead with 24 RBI.

WSU played add-on in the seventh as Ben Roberts came home on a wild pitch and Patrick McGrath followed with an RBI single to short, extending the lead to 10-2. Four more runs came home in the eighth highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Haakon Lande.

Cougar starter Joe Pistorese improves to 6-3 as he went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. With his seven innings of work, Pistorese became WSU's career leading in innings pitched with 331, passing Robert Ramsey (1993-96), who held the mark with 326.

WSU opened the scoring in the first as they strung together three hits, taking advantage of two walks, an error and wild pitch to produce three runs. Ian Sagdal drove in the first run with an RBI single to left while Roberts' infield single drove home the final run of the frame.

In the second San Jose State found the scoreboard courtesy of a pair of singles by Alex deWatteville and Turtle Kuhaulua, putting runners at the corners with one out. Dillan Smith followed with a sacrifice bunt, scoring deWatteville and cutting the lead to 3-1.

Chris Williams brought the Spartans to within one run in the fourth as he connected for a two-out, solo home run to right, his second home run of the season. That was as close as San Jose State came as Pistorese and reliever Layne Bruner, who came on to start the eighth, held the Spartans scoreless over the final five innings.

Sagdal finished his day going 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI. Roberts and Brennon Kaleiwahea each added two hits on the day.

San Jose State starter Hilario Tovar worked into the sixth inning, allowing six runs on eight hits as his record falls to 1-3. Brett Bautista and Shane Timmons each had two hits to pace San Jose State.

The four-game series concludes Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
