PULLMAN, Wash. – Victoria Matejevic's three-set win clinched Washington State's 4-3 victory over No. 58 San Francisco Saturday afternoon at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
It was Senior Day for the Cougars as prior to the match Elizaveta Luzina and Charlotte Koning were recognized for their contributions to the program. WSU finishes the regular season 13-12 and records its fifth-straight winning season. The last two senior classes have each left having four-straight winnings seasons.
The day started with doubles, where Maria Biryukova and Nastia Vasyukhina at No.3 quickly defeated Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and Sofia Holmberg, 6-3. The No. 2 pair of Donika Bashota and Matejevic followed the winning trend, clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Thyra Taune and Genevieve McCloskey. WSU's No. 1 duo of Luzina and Lize Leenknecht were trailing 4-5 to Andrea Ka and Marina Nikolic before play was suspended.
After taking the early 1-0 lead, Leenknecht at No. 3 gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Leenknecht posted a 7-5 first set over Nikolic, but Nikolic was unable to continue play and retired in the second set.
San Francisco tied the match at two apiece as Vasyukhina at No.6 fell 6-1, 6-0 to Holmberg, while Hadzi Tanovic outdueled Bashota, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.
The Cougars clinched the match taking the next two matches. At No. 2, Biryukova defeated Taune 6-3, 6-4, before Matejevic at No. 5 clinched the match for WSU, rallying to defeat McCloskey in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Luzina are No. 1 squared off against nationally-ranked Ka, but fell 7-6 (4), 6-2, rounding off the match, 4-3 in Washington State's favor.
Washington State is next in action at the Pac-12 Championships, April 23-26 in Ojai, Calif.
