Frost Powers Cougars Past New Mexico State, 11-1

PULLMAN, Wash.Cameron Frost's three-run home run highlighted a five-run fourth inning to lead Washington State to a 11-1 victory over New Mexico State in a nonconference game Monday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The Cougars (18-17) had pushed across two runs already when Frost drilled a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right for his second home run of the season. The inning's first run came on a double steal in which Jack Strunc came home and the other the result of a wild pitch.

WSU played add-on in the fifth with three more runs to close out the scoring. Strunc started the scoring with an RBI double followed by a wild pitch that brought home Brennon Kaleiwahea. Derek Chapman added an RBI single for the final margin of victory.

New Mexico State (4-28-1) leadoff hitter Quinnton Mack opened the game with a home run, his third of the season, to right off Cougar starter Scotty Sunitsch for a quick 1-0 lead, accounting for all of the Aggies' scoring.

A pair of first-inning hits led to three runs for the Cougars. Frost's RBI single to right scored Chapman and Wes Hatten followed with an RBI double to right-center. One out later, Hatten came home on a wild pitch from Aggie starter Trey Higginbotham.

Offensively, WSU collected 13 hits, three from Chapman and two from Frost and Strunc. Frost added four RBI and two runs scored while Strunc and Chapman each scored twice.

Sunitsch went 3 2/3 innings, leaving with the bases loaded and two outs in a 3-1 game. Sam Triece came on and struck out Mack to get out of the inning with WSU maintaining its two-run lead. Triece ended his night working 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and no hits allowed, earning his first win of the season.

Higginbotham suffered the loss as his record falls to 0-6 on the season.

The Cougars are next in action Thursday when they start a four-game series against San Jose State. First pitch from Bailey-Brayton Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
