CORVALLIS, Ore. – Trever Morrison's RBI double in the bottom of the 11th inning scored Christian Donahue with the winning run as No. 25 Oregon State defeated Washington State 2-1 Sunday at Goss Stadium.
In what turned out to be a pitcher's dual, the Beavers (18-5, 4-2) scored an unearned run in the 11th to complete the series sweep. Cougar reliever Ian Hamilton, working his fourth inning of the day, allowed a single to Donahue to start the inning. Donahue moved to second on a throwing error by Hamilton, who tried to pick him off first. One out later with Donahue at third, Morrison drilled a 1-0 pitch to the wall in right, scoring Donahue with the winning run.
Oregon State had opened the scoring in the fifth on a KJ Morris RBI double that scored Morrison, who led off the inning with a single.
The Cougars tied it in their next at-bat as PJ Jones was hit by a pitch then scored on Wes Leow's RBI double to left-center. Leow reached third with one out but could not be delivered home.
WSU used six pitchers on the day, with Matt Bower going 3 2/3 innings, striking out seven as he came on in relief of starter Nick Leonard, who faced just three batters, recording one out. Hamilton (0-1) came on in the eighth and worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out three as he suffered his first loss of the season.
Offensively, the Cougars outhit Oregon State 10-8, led by Leow who went three-for-five with two doubles and an RBI. Ian Sagdal added a pair of hits, including his fifth double of the season.
Morrison led the Beavers at the plate as he went three-for-four, while Donahue added a pair of hits. On the hill Luke Heimlich (1-2) picked up the win as he worked 5 1/3 innings in relief, scattering two hits with six strikeouts. Starter Travis Eckert worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run on eight hits.
The Cougars are next in action when they return to Bailey-Brayton Field to host No. 9 UCLA, Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
