SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 30 San Diego Toreros came from behind with two runs in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 5-4 win over Washington State in a nonconference game Tuesday night at Fowler Park.
Trailing 4-3, San Diego (11-7) loaded the bases on three walks, forcing the Cougars (12-8) to call on Matt Bower, the third hurler of the inning for WSU. On a 3-2 pitch, Jerod Smith walked, bringing home the tying run followed by a Kyle Holder groundout to give the Toreros the final margin of victory.
San Diego jumped out first with a pair of runs as Holder came home on Jesse Jenner's RBI double. Ryan Kirby followed with an RBI single to plate Jenner for the 2-0 lead. The lead moved to 3-0 in the second as Bryson Brigman lead off with a single and came around to score on Riley Adams RBI groundout.
WSU threatened in the third as it loaded the bases with two outs before Torero starter Jonathan Teaney induced Wes Leow to fly out to left. In the fourth the Cougars broke through, scoring four runs for a 4-3 lead. Shane Matheny's single up the middle score Cameron Frost, who led off with a single. After a sacrifice by Jack Strunc, Shea Donlin singled home Ben Roberts before Wes Hatten doubled home Matheny, tying the game at three. Ian Sagdal's groundout to second scored Hatten for the final run of the inning.
WSU threw eight pitchers on the night with Tyler McDowell suffering the loss as he went 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits as he fell to 1-2 on the season. Offensive, Pat McGrath went two-for-three while Hatten had the RBI double.
Drew Jacobs (1-0) picked up the win working three innings of scoreless relief, scattering one hit while striking out four.
The Cougars return to Pac-12 play Friday when they begin a three-game series at No. 25 Oregon State. Friday's contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start and will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
