PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State placed four in the finals of singles play during the second day of action at the 2015 WSU Invitational at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Two Cougars advanced to the finals in the Cougar Flight. Freshman Aneta Miksovska advanced by defeating Boise State's Nancy Menjivar, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, and Lize Leenknecht advanced with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Lucia Badillos of Idaho.
In the Crimson Flight, sophomore Donika Bashota advanced to the final after defeating Idaho's Ana Batiri, 6-1, 6-4. WSU's Maria Biryukova fell in her semifinal match 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, to Alyssa Tobita of Oregon. In the Gray flight, Barbora Michalkova fell in the semifinal round to Oregon's Shweta Sangwan, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Senior Trang Huynh had two consolation matches on the day, defeating Portland's Tatiana Grigoryan, 6-0, 6-3, and won 6-1, 6-2 over Marina Reimers of Portland.
In the WSU Flight, WSU's Victoria Matejevic defeated Oregon's Paloma Gomez, 6-3, 6-4, advancing to the final round. Sophomore Holly Monahan fell in the semifinal round to Oregon's Micheline Aubuchon, 7-5, 6-3.
WSU's Biryukova and Monahan competed in two matches in the Gray Doubles Flight. The duo opened the day by defeating Portland's Sarah Hellstern and Marina Reimers, 7-5, and won 7-5 over Saroop Dhatt and Emily Gould of Portland. The freshman duo of Miksovska and Michalkova picked up where they left off yesterday defeating Idaho's Clair Yang and Lucia Badillos, 6-2.
In the Crimson Doubles Flight, Leenknecht and Huynh won their first match of the day 6-2 over Boise State's Bobbi Oshiro and Ari Paules Aldrey. The duo then defeated Idaho's Maria Tavares and Ana Batiri, 6-2. WSU's Bashota and Matejevic defeated Portland's Radina Dimitrov and Tori Troesch, 6-0, and won 6-0 over Jelena Lazarevic and Tatiana Grigoryan of Portland.
Play continues at the WSU Invitational Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with one round of doubles followed by the final round of singles play.
