STANFORD, Calif. – Washington State advanced one doubles team to the third round at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals, while all three singles competitors were eliminated Saturday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
In doubles play, the No. 5 seeded duo of Lize Leenknecht and Donika Bashota picked up their eighth-straight doubles win on the year after posting a tough 8-7(3) victory over Santa Clara's Chelby Cooke and Daniella Silva. The duo will next face Anneka Watts and Sophie Watts from Fresno State.
WSU's senior duo of Maria Biryukova and Trang Huynh fell to San Jose State's Marie Klocker and Miyo Kobayashi, 8-1. In consolation doubles play, Victoria Matejevic and Holly Monahan fell to Seattle University's Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman, 8-3.
In singles play, No. 11 seeded Bashota defeated Stanford's Kimberly Yee, who was ranked the No. 1 player in multiple age divisions by the UTSA before her collegiate career, 6-0, 6-1. In the next round of play, Bashota fell 7-5, 6-3, to No. 2 Klara Fabikova of California. The sophomore's undefeated streak ends at 14 matches.
WSU's Huynh won 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, over No. 9 Jamie Pawid of St. Mary's, and fell in the next round to San Francisco's No. 8 Andrea Ka 6-2, 6-0. WSU's Biryukova fell in the third round to California's Lyann Hoang, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In singles consolation play, freshman Borbora Michalkova posted a 6-2, 6-1, win over Santa Clara's Nabila Farah, while Matejevic posted a 6-4, 2-1(ret.), victory over San Francisco's Shanna Dos Santos.
