STANFORD, Calif. – Washington State's Maria Biryukova, Trang Huynh and Donika Bashota advanced in singles, while two doubles teams advanced at the ITA Northwest Regionals Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
In singles play, Biryukova easily defeated Sacramento State's Emily McColl as she posted a sound 6-2, 6-2, victory followed by a 6-0, 6-2, win over No. 5 seeded Sophie Watts of Fresno State. Biryukova will face California Berkeley's Lyann Hoang in the third round Saturday.
WSU's Huynh impressed during the opening rounds as she posted two victories on the day. Huyhn won her first match 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, against Nevada Apollo of Gonzaga, and cruised in her second match defeating UC Davis' Isabella vonEbbe, 6-0, 6-1. The senior will face the No. 9 seeded Jamie Pawid of St. Mary's Saturday.
The No. 11 seeded Bashota had a bye in the first round and then advanced to round three by defeating Washington's Grace Sari Ysidora, 6-0, 7-6(5). Bashota will face Kimberly Yee of Stanford in the third round of play.
Junior Victoria Matejevic fell in a tightly contested match to Santa Clara's Chelby Cooke, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(2), while freshman Barbora Michalkova fell to San Francisco's Shanna Dos Santos, 6-4, 6-4.
The first round of doubles play kicked off Friday with Biryukova and Huynh soundly defeating Portland State's Alana Chaplin and Taylor Rees, 8-1. The duo will face San Jose State's Marie Klocker and Miyo Kobayashi in round two Saturday.
The No. 5 seeded duo of Bashota and Lize Leenknecht had a bye in the first round of play. The duo begins play in the second round Saturday against Santa Clara's Chelby Cooke and Daniella Silva.
WSU's Matejevic and Holly Monahan fell in the first round of play to Fresno State's Galina Bykova and Emma Wilson, 8-3.
