MAUI, Hawaii – The Washington State tennis team continued play at the 2015 Maui invitational by taking six of seven singles matches against host Hawaii Pacific and all six matches against Gonzaga.
Against Hawaii Pacific, Maria Biryukova posted a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over Lorena Gheorghe while Donika Bashota needed three sets to defeat Nicole Hoynaski, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. Also needing three sets was Victoria Matejevic, who rallied from a set down to defeat Lea Kruse-Utermann, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Lize Leenknecht had little trouble with Vivian Hansen, winning 6-2, 6-3 while Holly Monahan cruised past Sofia Tavitian, 6-1, 6-2. Nastia Vasyukhina closed out the first session with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tavitian.
Hawaii Pacific grabbed its lone win when Kristyna Hancaraova rallied for a three-set win over Elizaveta Luzina, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Against Gonzaga, who the Cougars were facing for the second time in two days, WSU swept five of the six matches in straight sets. Luzina defeated Alex Bourguignon, 6-3, 6-2, while Biryukova defeated Katie Edwards, 6-4, 6-2. Matejevic needed three sets to get past Kylie Peek, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 and Bashota escaped a close first set before cruising to a 7-5, 6-2 win over Sam Polayes.
Leenknecht remained perfect on the weekend as she got past Mel Yates, 6-2, 6-2 and Monahan won two close sets in defeating Sissie Koehler, 7-6 (6), 6-4.
Play at the non-team scoring Maui Invitational concludes Sunday as the Cougars face Hawaii Pacific in both singles and doubles.
