MAUI, Hawaii – The Washington State tennis team opened its 2015 season with a strong showing against Gonzaga during the first day of play at the Maui Invitational.
In singles action WSU captured three of the five matches with Elizaveta Luzina defeating Katie Edwards, 6-0, 6-2, Lize Leenknecht defeating Sissie Koehler 6-2, 6-2 and Maria Biryukova defeating Koehler 6-2 in a match that only went one set.
Gonzaga captured wins as Alex Bourguignon defeated Donika Bashota 6-3, 6-3 and Sam Polayes outlasted Victoria Matejevic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
In doubles play the Cougars won three of the four matches. Luzina and Leenknecht posted a 6-4 win over Polayes and Edwards and a 7-5 victory over Bourguignon and Mel Yates. Bashota and Matejevic posted a 6-2 win over Bourguignon and Koehler while Polayes and Edwards escaped with a 7-6 (7-3) win over Bashota and Matejevic.
Play at the non-team scoring Maui Invitational resumes Saturday as the Cougars will face Hawaii Pacific in the morning and Gonzaga in the afternoon.
