PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's tennis team had an impressive first day by winning 19 of 20 total matches at the 2014 Cougar Classic Friday afternoon at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
In the Crimson doubles flight, WSU's Elizaveta Luzina and Donika Bashota opened play by defeating a challenging Montana State pair of Naomi Holopainen and Jessica Brycki, 7-5. The duo then had little trouble paving the way to a semifinal berth with a 6-2 win over Eastern Washington's Erin Blessing and Dani Young 6-2.
Maria Biryukova and Victoria Matejevic continued the Cougars strong showing by posting a 6-2 victory against Eastern Washington's Chrissy Uriarte and Katrina Domingo and a 6-1 victory over Montana's Hannah Sulz and Cam Kincaid to reach the semifinals.
Cougar freshman Grace Lymer-Sullivan teamed with Gonzaga's Sissi Koehler to post a first-round victory over Idaho's Emmie Marx and Montana's Anabel Carbo Estruch, 6-4. In the next round, Boise State's Teal Vosburgh and Milena Toseva outlasted Lymer-Sullivan and Koehler, 6-3.
In the Gray doubles bracket, the winning trend continued as Lize Leenknecht and Nastia Vasyukhina advanced to the semifinals with wins against Eastern Washington's Carolina Lopez and Brittany Ellingsen, 6-1, and Seattle University's Madison Maloney and Barbara Ann Carey, 6-4.
Washington State dominated in the Crimson singles flight as No.1 Luzina, No.2 Leenknecht, Biryukova, and Bashota all swept in dominant fashion. Luzina posted a 6-0, 2-0 (ret.) win over Seattle's Jacqueline Jacques and a 6-0, 6-4 win over Montana State's Laura Middel in round two. Leenknecht easily advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Wanda Holopainen and a 6-2, 6-1 win over Janaya Smith of Eastern Washington.
Biryukova posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Young in the first round and a 7-5, 6-2 win over Seattle Kelli Woodman in round two. Bashota showed she could hold her own defeating Montana's Naomi Holopainen 6-0, 6-1 and out-dueling Seattle's Michelle Lui, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
In the Gray singles flight, Matejevic advanced through the first two rounds in convincing fashion. In the first round, Matejevic defeated EWU's Lopez, 6-1, 6-4, and then notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Angie Philipova of Montana State. Lymer-Sullivan had a similarly dominant performance beating Seattle's Audrey Scott 6-0, 6-2 in the first round and. Montana State's Jessica Brycki in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. Nastia Vasyukhina took down Shelby Cerkovnik of Montana State in her opening match, 7-5, 6-0, before falling to Eastern Washington's Katrina Domingo, 6-4, 6-4.
The Cougars continue play Saturday at the Cougar Classic with matches starting at 9 a.m. at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
