PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University women's golf team opened its 2014-15 season in first place at the WSU Cougar Cup at WSU's Palouse Ridge Golf Club. The Cougars shot 6-under par (570) in the opening 36 holes and maintain a 16-stroke lead over second-place Idaho (+10, 586). WSU senior Kristen Rue sits atop the leaderboard after carding a 138 (-6) on the day.
“We did a great job today,” Cougar Head Coach Kelli Kamimura said. “We were excited to get out there and get the season started. The team enjoys playing at home and they are doing well. We're looking forward to tomorrow.”
Rue finished 3-under par (69) in both rounds and notched 10 birdies through two rounds, including seven on the back nine. Senior Lindsay Harmon and junior Rachel Lewis both finished 1-under par (143) to give the Cougars three team scores under par. Harmon and Lewis are currently tied for seventh, along with Idaho's Leilanie Kim.
In their collegiate debuts, freshman Alivia Brown and Bree Wanderscheid each contributed a counting score. Wanderscheid provided a first round 74 (+2), carding three birdies in the opening 18 holes. Brown added a second round 72 (E) and is currently tied for 13th (+3, 147).
Competing as an individual, junior Nani Yanagi finished 4-under par (140) and sits in second place on the leaderboard. Junior Monica Huang, also competing as an individual, saved par in the second round and sits in 12th place (+2, 146).
