Utes Outlast Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. – Utah rallied for three runs in the top of the 13th inning to defeat Washington State 4-1 in Pac-12 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday night.

Kellen Camus (5-1), the second of four Washington State (20-24, 10-12 Pac-12) pitchers, yielded a leadoff single in the 13th. The senior responded with back-to-back strikeouts, two of his career-high eight in 3 2/3 innings of relief. After a stolen base and a wild pitch, Camus issued an intentional walk to put runners at the corners.

Matt Bower relieved Camus and induced a ground ball by pinch hitter Zach Jones. First baseman Patrick McGrath's throw to first was in time to end the inning, but second baseman Ian Sagdal dropped the ball for an error as the go-ahead run scored. Ian Hamilton took over for Bower and hit a batter to load the bases. Wyler Smith then delivered a two-run single to give the Utes (15-28, 5-18) some insurance.

Nick Green (2-4) struck out the side in the bottom of the 13th to complete 4 2/3 shutout innings and earn the victory.

Both starting hurlers pitched well enough to win, but each was left with a no decision. Washington State's Joe Pistorese gave up one run on three hits and struck out a season-high nine in nine innings. Utah's Mitch Watrous gave up one run on eight hits in 8 1/3 innings. He had a 1-0 lead until Ben Roberts doubled and P.J. Jones singled with one out in the ninth.

The series continues at 7 p.m., Saturday. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
