Cougars Drop Series Opener

PULLMAN, Wash. – Johnny Melero pitched 6 1/3 innings to lead San Jose to a 7-3 victory over Washington State at Bailey-Brayton Field, Thursday night.

Melero (1-3) allowed two runs on three hits, struck out two and walked three. The Spartans (8-18) scored in each of the first two innings to grab a 2-1 lead against the Cougars (9-13) and starter Jason Monda (1-2). Washington State's first run came courtesy of a double by Trek Stemp and a run-scoring single by Yale Rosen.

In the fifth, San Jose State chased Monda during a four-rally to extend its lead to 6-1. The Cougars scored in the bottom of the inning on a RBI-ground out by Stemp. The Spartans added a run in the sixth against Sean Hartnett. Washington State capped the scoring in the eighth on a double by Rosen and an RBI-single by P.J. Jones.

The four-game series continues, Friday at 6 p.m.
