TUCSON, Ariz. – Tanner Chleborad gave up one run in 6 1/3 inning and Washington State took the rubber game of its Pac-12 opening series 3-2 at Arizona, Sunday.

Chleborad (1-2) scattered nine hits, walked one and struck out one. The Cougars (6-9, 2-1 Pac-12) won a series over the Wildcats (11-11, 1-2) for the first time since 2009 and for the first time in Tucson since 2006.

“Our guys played hard for two-straight days,” Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. “We played really well today. This is not an easy park to pitch in and our guys did a tremendous job against a very good lineup.”

Washington State grabbed a 2-0 lead against Arizona starter Austin Schnabel (0-2) with a run in the third and another in the fourth. In the third, Trace Tam Sing doubled, moved to third on ground out and scored on a single by Collin Slaybaugh. In the fourth, Ian Sagdal walked with two outs, Ben Roberts singled and Tam Sing plated Sagdal with a single. Arizona answered with a run in its half of the fourth to pull within 2-1.

The Cougars added a run in the seventh against the Wildcats' bullpen. Tam Sing singled and Trek Stemp bunted for a hit. After Slaybaugh moved the runners up with a sacrifice, Nick Tanielu was intentionally walked. Yale Rosen singled to score Tam Sing and pushed the Washington State lead to 3-1.

The Wildcats scratched across a run in the eighth against Scott Simon before Matt Bower recorded the final out of the inning. Ian Hamilton worked the ninth for his fourth save.

Washington State steps out of conference to continue its road trip with a two-game series at San Diego, Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. both games.
