OJAI, Calif. -
The Washington State Cougars 2012-13 season came to an end Friday at the Pac-12 Championships at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club.
After posting a pair of victories Thursday, sophomore Elizaveta Luzina was the lone Cougar with a chance at winning a title. In her quarterfinal match, Luzina battled hard but couldn't overcome an early deficit to USC's Kaitlyn Christian, the No. 6 seed. Rallying back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set, Luzina forced a tiebreaker but drew no closer at Christian closed out the match, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
In the doubles invitational draw, Luzina and freshman Lize Leenknecht provided the lone win for the Cougars. The duo defeated Colorado's Dhany Quevedo and Mazy Watrous, 8-6, in the first round. In the second round, the Cougar pair was not as fortunate, falling to Utah's Callie Craig and Sarah Pham, the No. 2 seed, 8-6.
Senior Andjela Kankaras and junior Dajana Ognjenovic had a difficult match, facing the No. 4 seed in California's Cecelia Estlander and Annie Goransson. Koning and Ognjenovic fell to the California pairing, 8-0.
In the doubles championship draw, the Cougar duo of seniors Liudmila Vasilieva and Ksenia Googe fell to USC's Giuliana Olmos and Zoe Scandalis, 8-3.
In the consolation singles draw, the Cougars had positive showings from several players. Vasilieva defeated Elianne Douglas-Miron of Washington, 6-3, 6-1, closing out her WSU career with 107 singles victories, second most all-time.
Koning dropped the first set in her match against Morgan Thomas of UCLA before taking the second and forcing a tiebreaker in place of the third set. Koning prevailed, winning 6-3, 3-6 10-7. Leenknecht had no trouble against Ashley Tiefel in her consolation match, defeating her Colorado opponent 6-1, 6-2. Ognjenovic needed a deciding tiebreaker in her match against Carla Manzi Tenorio of Colorado. After taking the first set, Ognjenovic dropped the second set before dominating the tiebreaker en route to a 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 victory. Googe added another Cougar win after she handled Holly Flemming of UCLA, 6-1, 6-1.
Continuing with the consolation draw, Musilovich fell to Colorado's Winde Janssens 6-4, 6-0 while Kankaras had similar troubles against Quevedo, falling 6-2, 6-3.
The Cougars ended their season with a 14-12 overall record and 2-8 in conference play, finishing in eighth place.
