Luzina Advances to Pac-12 Quarterfinals

April 25, 2013

OJAI, Calif. - Sophomore Elizaveta Luzina won two matches Thursday to advance to Friday's quarterfinal at the 2013 Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championships, Thursday at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club.

In the singles invitational draw, Luzina received an opening-round bye before posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Oregon's Laura Buttner in the second round. Luzina then capped her day with a convincing, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Stanford's Natalie Dillon, moving her into a Friday quarterfinal match at noon.

In the singles championship draw, senior Liudmila Vasilieva was the first Cougar to step onto the court, squaring off against USC's Giuliana Olmos. Vasilieva jumped out to an early lead, taking the first set 6-4. The momentum swung out of her favor however, as Olmos forced the match to a third set after winning the second 6-0. The outcome was decided in a tiebreaker where Vasilieva held two match points but could not close it out, losing 11-9 in the tiebreaker as Olmos advanced with a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (11-9) victory. Senior Ksenia Googe faced Desirae Krawczyk of Arizona State in her first round match. Googe struggled to get anything going against Krawczyk, falling 6-2, 6-1. Senior Andjela Kankaras had her work cut out for her, facing the No. 1 overall seed in the draw, California's Zsofia Susanyi. Kankaras held a first-set lead but could not capitalize, falling to the nation's fifth-ranked player, 6-4, 6-3.

Other Cougars in action in the invitational draw included junior Dajana Ognjenovic kept it close in the first set before falling to Arizona's Laura Oldham, 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Lize Leenknecht also received a first-round bye before falling to Utah's Paige Miles, 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles action is set to begin Friday morning at the Pac-12 Championships. Vasilieva and Googe will compete in the championship draw while Musilovich and Kankaras, Leenknecht and Luzina, and Ognjenovic and Koning will all compete in the invitational bracket.
