AUSTIN - Washington State track and field decathlete Spencer Wordell scored a lifetime-best score of 7,093 points Thursday at the 86th Clyde A. Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Wordell, a junior from Spokane, surpassed his previous decathlon PR of 6,664 points and tallied 7,093 points which was ninth place among the 19 men who finished the decathlon.

Thursday Wordell ran the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.63 seconds, threw the discus 108-feet 2 inches (32.96m), pole vaulted a PR height of 14-5 1/4 (4.40m), threw the javelin a PR distance of 177-2 (54.00m), and ran the 1500m in a time of 4 minutes 30.28 seconds.

"Spencer did well today. Other than a little trouble with the discus he was solid today," Cougar Head Coach and multis coach Rick Sloan said. "I don't think it is out of the question that Spencer can score 7400 to 7500 points at the conference championships."

After a first-day PR total of 3,527 points, Harris ran the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.11 seconds, threw the discus 137-11 (42.04m), pole vaulted 14-1 1/4 (4.30m), threw the javelin 164-9 (50.23m), but did not run the 1500m. Harris, a senior from Kent, Wash., struggled through the day with flu-like symptoms and felt he could not finish the 1500m so did not start the race.

"Sean battled through the day but was out-of-breath and light-headed," Sloan said. "He just couldn't warm up for the 1500m as he had the chills."

Duke junior Curtis Beach won the decathlon with 8,011 points.

The rest of the Cougar men's and women's teams will compete Friday and Saturday at the Stanford Invitational meet.
