Day One Results

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's tennis team completed a successful first day at the 2012 Cougar Classic, Friday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Cougars had seven players advance to the quarterfinals and three doubles teams are playing in the semifinals, Saturday.

Washington State won 14 of its 15 matches in singles play and earned victories in seven of eight doubles matches.

In the Flight 1 singles bracket, seniors Liudmila Vasilieva, Andjela Kankaras, Ksenia Googe, and sophomore Elizaveta Luzina each advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of straight-set victories. Vasilieva was the most impressive, losing five games total in her four sets played.

In the Flight 2 singles bracket, sophomore Charlotte Koning and junior Olga Musilovich both advanced to the quarterfinals with Koning only dropping three games total and Musilovich only dropping five games. Lize Leenknecht won her first match but fell to Ellie Crum from Montana State in her second match.

In the Flight 3 singles bracket, senior Erin Troedson defeated Brittany Ellingsen of Eastern Washington 6-3, 7-5 in the second round after receiving a first round bye.

The Cougars advanced three doubles teams into the semifinals. In Flight 1 Vasilieva/Koning defeated Wurden/James of Seattle 8-1 and Driver/Carter of Montana 8-6. Kankaras/Googe defeated Knight/Werner of Eastern Washington 8-0, but were defeated by Lozano/Bermudez of Idaho 8-4. Vasilieva/Koning will play Basil/LaLone of Boise State in a semifinal match.

In Flight 2, Leenknecht/Luzina defeated Oliveira/Human of Lewis-Clark State 8-2 and Tsan/Bates of Montana State 8-1. Leenknecht/Luzina will face Mackey/Gbadamosi of Montana in the semifinals round. Musilovich/Troedson defeated Norens/Nagai of Eastern Washington 8-2 and Lopez/Crum of Lewis & Clark 8-6. Musilovich/Troedson will face Oshiro/Mok of Boise State in the semifinals round.

Play will resume Saturday morning at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts at 9 a.m.
