Cougars Lose Series Opener to Washington

SEATTLE - Washington scored three times against Washington State's bullpen and the Huskies won 5-2 in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 Conference baseball series, Friday.

Washington (29-24, 12-16 Pac-12) broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the seventh against Washington State (27-27-27, 11-17 Pac-12) reliever Scott Simon (2-3). Then, the Huskies added an insurance run in the eighth against Kellen Camus.

"We missed some opportunities on offense early in the game," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Late, we did not execute our pitches and Washington took advantage.

The Huskies scored in the first and fourth against Cougar starter Tanner Chleborad to take a 2-0 lead. Washington State tied the game in the fifth with two runs against Washington starter Aaron West.

Ian Sagdal led off the inning with a single. With one out, Collin Slaybaugh singled and Taylor Ard walked to load the bases. Derek Jones followed with a double to score Sagdal and Slaybaugh while Ard moved to third. The Cougars had a chance to take the lead, but Adam Nelubowich and Tommy Richards struck out to end the frame.

Tyler Kane (7-2) worked 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief to earn the victory for Washington.
