Cougars Lose to Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga spotted Washington State three runs before coming back to defeat the Cougars 7-4 in nonconference baseball, Tuesday night.

Derek Callahan (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball in relief to earn the win for the No. 30 Bulldogs (26-9). Scott Simon (2-2) yielded a pair of unearned runs in relief and suffered the loss for the Cougars (18-15).

"We didn't respond well to adversity tonight," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We have to learn how to do that in tight games."

The Cougars put their first run on the board in the second inning against Gonzaga starter Kenny Smith. Adam Nelubowich led off with a walk. With one out, Patrick Claussen singled and Nelubowich came all the way around when the Bulldogs' misplayed the ball in the outfield.

Washington State manufactured a run in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Kyle Johnson led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Jason Monda. With two outs, Derek Jones plated Johnson with a run-scoring single. The Cougars added a run in the third when Tommy Richards led off the frame with his second home run of the season.

Gonzaga tied the game with three runs in the sixth against Washington State starter Kyle Swannack. With two outs, the Bulldogs put together three-straight singles and a two-run double that ended Swannack's outing.

In the sixth, Gonzaga took advantage of a pair of Washington State errors to add two unearned runs against Simon and grab a 5-3 lead. The Bulldogs tacked on two runs in the eighth off the Cougar bullpen for a 7-3 lead. Washington State capped the scoring on a two-out, RBI-single by Jones in the ninth.

Washington State continues its road stretch with a three-game series at Oregon beginning Friday...first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m...game will be televised by Comcast Sports Net Northwest.
