STANFORD, Calif. -
Senior Liudmila Vasilieva and sophomore Elizaveta Luzina each advanced to the round of 32 following the first day of play at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Luzina advanced with a pair of straight-set wins, defeating San Jose State's Margot Charron 6-3, 6-4 in the first round followed by a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nicole Long of Oregon. Vasilieva, entering the tournament as the No. 6 seed, drew a first round bye before defeating Washington's Natali Coronel, 6-3, 6-0.
Senior Andjela Kankaras defeated Saskia Angerer of Sacramento State 6-2, 7-6 in the first round while sophomore Charlotte Koning also advanced to the second round after defeating Zoe Davidson of UC Davis 6-3, 6-3. Both Cougar women fell in the second round as Kankaras lost to Alice Duranteau of California 6-4, 6-3, and Koning had similar results, falling 6-2, 6-0 to Ane McPike of Cal Poly.
Junior Olga Musilovich was unable to make it past the first round after a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Melissa Kobayakawa of UC Davis and Erin Troedson faced similar difficulties in the first round, falling to Katie Edwards of Gonzaga 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Lize Leenknecht closed the gap in the second set before falling to Erica Medlin of San Jose State 6-1, 7-5.
