LOS ANGELES - USC defeated Washington State 6-2 at Dedeaux Field, Friday in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference baseball series.
The Trojans (25-29, 13-12 Pac-10) took a 4-0 lead against Washington State (24-28, 8-17 Pac-10) starter Adam Conley (6-7) with a run in the second, another in the third, and a pair of unearned tallies in the fifth.
The Cougars picked up a run in the sixth on a one-out double by Derek Jones, a single from Taylor Ard and a Jason Monda sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the sixth, USC produced two runs on a pair of infield hits, two sacrifice bunts and another single to increase its lead to 6-1.
Washington State capped the scoring in the eighth with an unearned run against Andrew Triggs (5-4). Nate Blackham led off with a single and moved to second on an error. With one out, Blackham came home on a single by Jones.
The series continues at 2 p.m., Saturday.
